An introductory lesson developed for University of Kansas Engineering Summer Camps, moving from amino acids and proteins to bio-inspired applications in manufacturing, sensing, materials and environmental remediation.

A multiple-sequence-alignment activity turned biological sequence comparison into a physical puzzle. Students reconstructed sequence fragments by identifying patterns, similarities and mutations, then connected those observations back to structure and function.

The idea behind the lesson

Nature uses proteins to perform work. Bioengineering begins by understanding how those systems function, then learning how to direct them toward specific purposes.

The lesson moved from familiar building materials to amino acids, peptides, proteins and metabolic pathways before arriving at engineered applications. Proteins were introduced not simply as biological structures, but as functional molecular machinery: catalysts, recognition elements, binders and mediators of complex chemical processes.

Studying biological function creates an engineering opportunity: identify what nature already does well, understand the mechanism, and ask whether that function can be targeted, redirected or combined with materials to solve a different problem.

From mechanism to application

The lecture connected molecular function to larger engineering systems—from enzymatic manufacturing and biosensing to biomaterials and environmental remediation.

The goal was to give students a simple framework for biomimetics: biology is full of systems that already recognize, assemble, transport, transform and respond. Engineers can study those mechanisms and use them as the basis for designed technologies.
